Our goal and vision

Using Permaculture principles, ethics and strategies for planning to design and establish a self sufficient, sustainable and comfortable habitat and community, within the carrying capacity of our planet, as a role-model for humankind.
A Permanent-Soil-Culture for building humus and topsoil as we see it as the foundation of a Permanent Culture, which would allow humanity to inhabit our planet for ever.

4. Why are we want to engage our self in an Community Wealth supporting Trust!
- We think that the environmental crisis is real and of the magnitude that will certainly transform modern global industrial society beyond recognition. In the process, the well being and even survival of the worlds expanding population is directly threatened.
Our aim is to prepare a space of resilience as a role model for sustainable living and to share knowledge and resources with the local, national and global community.
Sustainability as we understand it is, when a system produces enough energy over its lifetime to reproduce itself.

- The ongoing and future impact of global industrial society and human numbers on the worlds wondrous biodiversity are assumed to be farm grater than the massive changes of the last few hundred years as well as the possibility to foresee the consequences of these fact. 
Our aim is to preserve the biodiversity of heritage vegetable, grain, medicinal and all other seeds and plants used by humans for their nutrition and health.
As well as preserving the biodiversity of plants, animals, soil microbiology and all live in general.

- Living up to the permaculture ethics and principles we
like to give priority to using existing wealth to rebuilt natural capital, especially top soil, trees and forest, as proven storage of wealth to sustain humanity into a future with  less fossile fuels.

Philosophic of vision

  Human beings and the Earth is on the suicide path globally.
(1)  Global crisis going alone with global warmth
(2)  Improvement of unemployment for the sake of the profit with  the development of the technology (Therefore, temporarily employments and removing from theemployments and the migrant issues with searching employments by exceeding the national state)
(3)  New technology developments with non-values and non-morals (Especially genetic research, ability to mix genetic, genetic research, artificial biology) Abuses that may be occurred in the process rooted greed, profit and power.
(4)  Since the knowledge cannot be further maintained as a private property and the knowledge is essential for the production, it will befallen the good existence of this production models.  (biological diseases and arms)
In the above global context, it is collapsing the clearly existence social system and its serious issue is to arise a basic pressure. They are:
(1)  Economic waifs and strays
(2)  Political waifs and strays
(3)  Environment waifs and strays
In this situation, we are facing to the question called “History”. What is the solution to the question on human “history”?   
The social environment we are living now is based on the State- power. Every human activity is behaving on the base of the power & profit. This activity is existence towards the Human nation and the Earth for their suicide.
What is to be done?
It is to find out the new human being where the power and profit is not important. A symbolic order should be generated by this task to be done in ideological period.
It should be new life (collective) as community manner.
(1)  It should be moved in to decentralized, small scale, collective production model.
(2)  Instead of the life that is based on the employment as salary labours, opening a mutual assistance, mutual perfect life.
(3)  Acting as considering the owners of the distinctions of human culture as the unique human being and giving due honor to the relevant cultures.
(4)  Building a new collective practices that exceed the individualism rooted family as a symbolic order.
(5)  Creating environments that balance social values and natural values as a building of new environments. Above basic acknowledgements is based for our community life.

what's on going....

We are creating a community education centre based on biodiversity, permaculture, self-sustainability, low-impact and eco-tourism in Thennakoongama in Sri Lanka.

Organic farming is based on a biological understanding of soil fertility that emphasises the interactions among soil humus, soil organisms and plant roots, as well as on an ecological understanding linking plants, animal and humans. However  it will always have to confront the urgencies of time, environmental affects and also face the question of how to increase production and to help feed people profitably?

Traditional farming methods and technology help us to organise the production of crops, vegetable, fruits and livestock so that they harmonise rather than conflict with natural system. On our farm, we are using a production system which avoids the use of synthetically compounded fertilisers, pesticedes, growth regulators and livestock feed additives.

We make biopesticde for insect pest and disease management by using natural plants, such as Neem (Azadirachta indica), knowing that every plant species has developed an inbuilt unique chemical clompex structure so – called secondary metabolites, that protects it from pests.

All parts of Neem tree possess insecticidal property, but seed kernel is the most active and it is quite promising against pests such as (S. gregaria, L. migratoria, H. armigera, S. litura, P. xylostella). Biopesticides are being considered as environmentally safe, selective, biodegradable, economical and renewable alternatives for use in Integrated pest management (IPM).

What is more, we fertilise and improve soil with animal secrets (dung and urine) from goats, chicken and cows. It has a regaining importance for maintaining soil fertility. 

Moreover as a sustainable farm we are using solar energy instead of purchased energy. 

As construction materials for building houses and furniture we use palm leaves, sand, mud, clay and wood in combination with brick . 

Our source of drinking water are wells, that is why using organic pesticides and fertilisers is even more important for human and animal wellbeing and to avoid health problems caused by nitrate leaching through soil (as this can contaminate the wells).  

In many respects organic farming is a way of life as much as it is a method of farming. The profibility of organic farms depends on the higher prices that their products command in the market place. Organic agriculture is not based exclusively on short term economics, but also consider ecological concepts. Organically grown and sustainably raised, it is good for the consumer, the farmer and the environment.

Our Ultimate goal is to improve the quality of human life based on our ability to manage, adopt and provide adequate organic products. We build community with neighbours and people from abroad participating as a volunteers  to grow much of our own food to provide food security.

Our Plan for an Eco-Community model farm

We started the ecological model farm in October 2012. It consists of a lake which has the size of half an acre, six mango trees, ten cows, two mud houses (one of them having four rooms), 2 acres of paddy field, around 20 coconut trees, two water catchment places, two small rocks, a cowshed, 2 acres of home garden and a resource center.

For the development and the maintenance of the ecological model farm the labor and the resources are taken from volunteers and wwoofers from many different countries. In order to get the maximum output to the farm we are glad that they support us with their various knowledge and experience. 

There are many purposes to develop such a model farm:

  • We can act as a role model for other farms and organisations which deal with organic farming
  • We can support other farmers facing difficulties caused by climate change. The eco community collects the relevant data and suggests alternatives that they can use to continue with less issue due to the climate changes.
  • We want to encourage the small farmers to contribute to the food sovereignty.
  • We want to develop theories about integrated pest management (IPM), biodynamics and permaculture and give the relevant practical knowledge

The farming community at Thennakoongama is involved in paddy cultivation, various cereals and pulses of shifting agriculture - green gram, cowpea and leguminous varieties thrive well in this soil. 
This daring venture was initiated by a group of young natural organic farmers. The community leader has been a pioneer in this organic agricultural movement with the experience he has gathered through living with organic farming communities in Sri Lanka and abroad, especially in Great Britain. 

The great teachers of natural farming in Asia - Albert Howard (pioneer in the study of organic agriculture in India), Masanobu Fukuoka (founder of 'Do-nothing farming'), Subhash Palekar (who introduced 'Zero-Budget Natural Farming') and Shri Ragaveshwara Barathi Swamiji (the religious leader who campaigns for saving the indigenous cattle breeds of India) serve as our guides in this endeavor. We are doing our best to absorb all the experiences of these great teachers and introduced integrated multi-crop farming with indigenous cattle-breeding and other indigenous live stocks. This ecological farm is a place of research for students and youth, as well as for 
agricultural research scientists coupled with the rich experiences of the local farmers. It propagates all methods and technologies that allow nature to regenerate in order to continue the process of creation. 

The farm is a research station open to all foreign students to try out their experiments directed towards pulling ourselves out of green revolution technologies. Our plan is to initiate natural food production, natural healing in various rich traditions of indigenous Ayurveda, Homeopathy and other prevalent forms of healing.

Home Garden
Presently we have 2 acres of home garden (Harachi Garden) for our day-to-day-needs. We have two plantations of 80 organic papaya trees, 60 cashew trees, hundreds of pumpkins and eggplants and when the rain comes we have 2 acres of indigenous rice.
